John Stevens Rhodes, 101 years of age, of Beatrice, passed away at the Homestead House Thursday morning, May 12, 2011.

He was born on July 18, 1909, in Beatrice to Arthur and Anna (Merril) Rhodes, and he lived in Beatrice most of his life. John was a 1928 graduate of Beatrice High School and a 1933 graduate at the University of Nebraska with a BS in Dairy Husbandry. He was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity and the Alpha Zeta Honorary fraternity at UNL.

John was married to Grace Barger on June 22, 1936, until she passed away in 1987, and then was married to Janet Jenks on Aug. 22, 1988, until she passed away in 2010.

He was a Jersey cattle breeder, past president of the Nebraska Jersey Cattle Club, past president of the Nebraska State Dairymen's Association, and had been a Ralston Purina Distributor for 22 years. John was a member and elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Beatrice; member of the Beatrice Masonic Lodge 26, A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years; Sesostris Temple of the Shrine; Blue Valley Shrine Club and the Fireman Shrine Unit; a member of the Noon Kiwanis Club for over 60 years and past Lt. Governor of the NE/IA District; and past member board of directors of the Community Food Pantry and Emergency Services at St. John Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his daughter Susan Byars and husband Dr. Ronald Byars of Lexington, Ky.; stepdaughters, Susan Lohn and husband Peter of Torrance, Calif., and Cindy Hansen and husband Bill of Omaha; five grandchildren, David Dillow and wife Gwen, Dr. Jeffrey Dillow and wife Beth, Ann (Dillow) Crowley and husband Dr. Tim Crowley, Stephen Byars and wife Lisa Blackadar, and Matthew Byars and wife Melissa; five stepgrandchildren, Berit (Lohn) Werker and husband Bill, Wade Lohn and wife Grace, Kenyon Lohn, Kyle Hansen, and Erin Hansen; and 19 great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Anna (Merril) Rhodes; first wife, Grace (1987); second wife, Janet (2010); and daughter, Sara Dillow and her husband Dr. Byron Dillow.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 16, at the First Presbyterian Church, Fifth and High, Beatrice, with Rev. Jimmy Shelbourn officiating. Inurnment of his ashes will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery, Beatrice. There will be no viewing, but a register book will be available for signatures from noon-5 p.m. Sunday and on Monday from 9 a.m.-noon at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice. A family prayer service will be held at 1:15 p.m. Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the First Presbyterian Church and to Camp Calvin Crest with the funeral home in charge.
