MRS. GEORGE MAPHIS DEAD
Mrs. Ann Elizabeth Maphis, wife of Mr. George Maphis, died Saturday evening at
Hawkinstown, this county, as the result of paralysis. Her age was 87 years, 3
months and 2 days. Her husband, who is about one year her senior , is still
living and is in fairly good health. This venerable couple had lived together
for more than 64 years.
Mrs. Maphis was born on Stony Creek, this county, and was a Miss Cline before
her marriage. She was a sister of Rev. John P. Cline, a Lutheran minister widely
known in his day, and was the last surviving member of her family. She was
paralyzed more than two years ago and had since been a confirmed invalid. A fall
in August from a wheel chair injured her spine and left her entirely helpless.
Her remains were buried on Sunday in the Lantz graveyard not far from her
birthplace, Rev. W. J. D. Sherer, of this place, conducting the services. She
had been a member of the Lutheran church from her girlhood.
Beside her husband Mrs. Maphis leaves four children. They are Mrs. David B.
Sites, of Broadway, Luther and Tuner Maphis, of Hawkinstown and Linden Maphis,
who resides in Eastern Virginia.
