Ezra was born in Indiana. Son of James H. Smock. He moved to Rossville, Illinois and lived there all of his life. He was a "stationary engineer" (operated steam engines). Ezra was a Mason. In 1898, Ezra was one of the sixteen founding charter members of the Rossville Chapter #386 of the Order of Eastern Star on October 5, of that year. Minnie Rozettie Brown was married to Ezra E. Smock on the 24th day of August, 1887 A. D. by Rev. W. F. Beadles. The couple had one child, James Francis (Frank) Smock. Frank lived in East Chicago, Indiana and was killed in a automobile accident in East Chicago, Indiana in 1952 while living in Gary, Indiana at the home of his son, James Edward ('Bud') Smock. Minnie died in childbirth with her second child and so did the infant daughter. After Minnie's death, Frank was raised by Minnie's mother, Mary Irene (nee Reddick) Brown (she later married J.F. Pierce in 1909). Minnie is buried in the Rossville Cemetery next to Ezra. Their infant daughter is supposedly buried there as well. Ezra re-married a Sarah C.(nee Hawk)Bennett after Minnie's death. Sarah was from Indiana. Ezra died in 1929 a hospital in Kankakee, Illinois. Sarah died in 1947 and is buried in a Waynetown, Indiana cemetery. Ezra had an older sister, Nancy and a younger sister, Lillian (or Lella). His younger sister lived nearby in Hoopeston, Illinois. Her married name was Lillian (Lella) Patterson.
