Charles Custis Thacker Born on January 31, 1931, in Colleen, Virginia, Charles Custis Thacker passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2011, in Charlottesville, Virginia.

"Chump" was the youngest child born to the late Leslie Thomas and Mary Lee Mays Thacker, who loved and spoiled him in equal measure. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Charlotte Lee Brewer, Florence Seay Mahoney, and Stuart Watson Thacker; and his grandson, Nathan August Thacker.

He graduated from Lovingston School and joined the United States Air Force in 1948. After serving four years -- one in Tokyo -- he enrolled at the University of Richmond and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was a lifelong fan of the Virginia Cavaliers and attended football games for 70 years.

In 1960, he met his wife Margery Ann Baker, and they were married a year later. After living briefly in Los Angeles and Ohio, they settled in Richmond where they lived 40 years until moving to Crozet, Virginia.

Charlie sold business forms for several companies and ended his career with the Commonwealth of Virginia. After retiring, he spent his time gardening, traveling, and writing down a vast and impeccable store of memories from his youth in Nelson County, Virginia, including tales of his grandfather, George Watson Thacker and great-grandfather, Alexander Addison Loving, who were present at Appomattox.

Charlie leaves behind his devoted wife of 50 years, Margery; his son, Ken Thacker and his wife, Maggie, and grandchildren Emmaline, Owen, and Gray, of Crozet; his daughter, Marta Matthews and her husband, Marty, of Raleigh, North Carolina; his faithful dog, Ben; and many relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held Saturday, May 21, 2011, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 10627 Patterson Avenue, Richmond.

Memorial donations may be made to Western Albemarle Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 188, Crozet, VA 22932.
