Hiram Wise Maxwell was one of the early settlers in Garden County, Nebraska. At the age of 17, he left his home in Berlin, Ohio, and came to Paola, Kansas, where he made his home with an aunt until he became of age. He then filed on a claim in Antelope Valley in Garden County, then called Deuel County, Nebraska. There he built a sod house and married Lotta Johnson Henry who had a daughter named Edna
Hiram, better known as "hi", being a strong and able-bodied man, made the most of the hardships of the pioneer life. With an ox team, named Duke and Dan, he hauled water in barrels from Blue Creek for his water supply until he was able to drill a well. Before the railroad came and before the bridge was built across the North Platte River, freighting was done by fording the river and getting supplies from Chappell and Big Springs. He hauled across the river with Duke and Dan. He possessed several talents: as a Carpenter he built many houses and barns over the country; he helped build the first store building in Oshkosh as well as the Opera house which is now a Museum
