Farmer Dies of Injuries
George W. BLACKFORD, 59, a farm hand at the Alvern Wendel Jr., farm on highway 141 near Bronson, died Thursday afternoon of injuries suffered a few hours earlier when he became entangled in machinery while grinding feed.
Dr. Thomas L. Coriden, Woodbury county medical examiner, attributed the death to shock from injuries incurred accidentally at the farm. Mr. Blackford suffered fractures of both upper legs and had the left arm torn off. Considerable skin was torn from various parts of the body. Mr. Blackford apparently was caught in the power takeoff while grinding feed in the hog lot on the Wendel property. Another employee, Ray Johnson took the man to the corn crib
and telephone the family for help and for blankets. Shortly after the mishap Blackford arrived at a Sioux City hospital, where several physicians made every effort to save his life. He died there later in the afternoon.
Mr. Blackford was born 10 September 1901 at Mapleton, Iowa. However he spent most of his life around the Moville vicinity.
On 24 December 1925, he married the former Nola May JONES in Dakota City, Nebraska. Mr. Blackford was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church at Moville.
Survivors include the widow, Nola; his father, Charles BLACKFORD Sr. of Moville; a son, George William BLACKFORD Jr. of Sioux City; 3 daughters, Mrs. Alice FUEHRER and Mrs. Betty MITCHELL, both of Sioux City, and Mrs. Vivian WHITE of Oakdale, Calif., visiting here when the accident occurred; 6 brothers, Alfonso BLACKFORD, Marvin BLACKFORD, Everett BLACKFORD and Jerry BLACKFORD, all of Moville, Charles BLACKFORD Jr., of Sioux City and Bert BLACKFORD of Downey, Calif.; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Eunice JOHNSON of Soldier, Ia., Mrs. Melva Jean STEVENSON of Sioux City and Mrs. Margaret LEE.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Evangelical United Brethren Church. Rev. Dale W. Church officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Moville.
