Edward Clyde Silvia, 29 of West Hickory. was held without bond Saturday night for the rifle slaying of Miss Alice Neill Siggins, prominent citizen of West Hickory. State police charge Mr. Silvia with the murder of the 87-year old Miss Siggins, a retired school teacher and principal, when he turned himself in at the local State Police barracks. Miss Siggins was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. John Rees of Tionesta.
The tragedy occurred about 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening when Miss Siggins and her housekeeper were confronted at the door of the Siggins home by a gunman who had pulled his T-shirt up over his face, requesting money. When they refused the man, he allegedly shot Miss Siggins. The weapon was reported to be a 30-30 caliber deer rifle. The bullet entered the left shoulder and traveled through her chest, instantly killing the victim, according to an autopsy performed Sunday.
When the rifle was fired, Mrs. Opal Redman of Tryonville, RD, the housekeeper and companion of Miss Siggins, ran from the house. She was followed by the assailant and taken back into the home where she relinquished the keys to her car and told the man she would give him two hours if he would leave. After he took her car and left, Mrs. Redman ran to the home of neighbors who notified the police.
The state Police were called earlier by Mrs. Silvia, the former Ruth Vargason of West Hickory, when he left his home following an argument taking his deer rifle and threatening his own life. When shots were heard in the area, the family again called the police who were in the area at the time of the shooting, searching for Mr. Silvia. Roadblocks were set up in Pleasantville where the car was found parked on a side street. Mr. Silvia had gone to the home of Robert Gordon, a friend, who called Rev. John Swatzfager of Tionesta. Rev. Swatzfager went to Pleasantville and brought Mr. Silvia back to the local barracks. Silvia was taken before Justice of the Peace A.D. Sager and charged with the murder of Miss Siggins, then lodged in Forest County jail to await trial.
Edward Silvia is the father of four pre-school children, and employed by West Hickory Lumber Company. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Silvia of Tionesta. State Police Cpl. Vern Smith of Tionesta is heading the investigation, assisted by Trooper Sherman Muse.

Miss Siggins was a prominent resident of West Hickory, having descended from the original Siggins family who received the entirety of the town in a land grant in 1794.

Interment will be in the Siggins Family cemetery at West Hickory. (Source: Obits in Tidioute Paper) Photo # 4, S. #11.
