Walter M. Roberts Mr. Walter M. Roberts, 97, of Indianola, died May 1 1 , 1996 at South Sunflower County Hospital. He was a retired prison guard. Mr. Roberts was born in Smith County. He had been a resident of Indianola since 1989, moving here from Sunflower. He was a former night Marshall in Sunflower and retired from Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman as a guard. He was a Lutheran and a former member of Ms. Sheriffs & Peace Officers Association. Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Roberts of Indianola and a sister, Willie Ashabranner of Heber Springs, Ark. Services were May 14 at 10:00 a.m. at Mortimer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Laird officiating and burial at Indianola Memorial Gardens. Mortimer Funeral Home of Indianola was in charge of arrangements.
