Funeral services for Garrett Berki are scheduled for Wednesday at El Camino Memorial Sorrento Valley Chapel. Berki, a Mission Valley resident and 2010 La Jolla High School graduate, died May 11 at Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest. He was 18.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner's office ruled Sunday that Berki died of a gunshot wound to the chest. Police say that Berki was shot after being robbed by three teens posing as sellers of a Craigslist item.
According to police, Berki, a Mesa College student, and his girlfriend drove to Paradise Hills, an east San Diego neighborhood, to meet up with the seller of an item listed on Craigslist. The couple was allegedly robbed of their cash and cell phones by three 17-year-olds who fled the scene. Berki allegedly followed their vehicle to get a license plate number but was shot when the two cars were in a cul-de-sac. NBC San Diego reported Berki was looking to buy a MacBook Pro he found listed for $600 on Craigslist.
Rashon Abernathy, Seandell Jones and Shaquille Jordan, all 17, are accused of robbing Berki and shooting him to death. The three pleaded not guilty May 13. They will be tried in adult court and are held on $5 million bail each and face 50 years to life in prison if convicted.
Visitation for Berki will be 3 to 8 p.m. at El Camino Memorial Sorrento Valley Chapel at 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd., San Diego 92121. Interment is 11 a.m., Thursday.
