US Congressman. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, he was known by his middle name as Garnett Duncan. He graduated from the Law Department at Yale College in 1821 and became a lawyer in Louisville. He was elected as a Whig to represent Kentucky's 7th District in the United States House of Representatives and served from 1847 to 1849. While a Congressman, he was a member of the Committee on Naval Affairs and supported an act to extend time limitations on satisfying claims made during the War of 1812 involving bounty lands for military services. He declined to become a candidate in 1848 and moved to New Orleans, Louisiana to resume his legal practice. He retired from his profession in 1860, traveled Europe, and became a resident of Paris, France until his health began to fail in 1875. He returned to Louisville where he later died when he was 75 years old.
