Lorenzo was the son of Frank J. and Ann M. (Foster) Kinney. He was the first professor appointed to Rhode Island State College (now the University of Rhode Island), coming to the Experiment Station in 1889. He resigned his professorship of horticulture ten years later to devote his full time to his nursery, Lowland Rhododendron Farm, where he grew rhododendrons and other broad leafed evergreens. He was a member of Kingston Congregational Church and the Tavern Hall Club, and a member of the executive committee of the Rhode Island Nurserymen's Association.

He was a graduate of Massachusetts Agricultural College and held a B.S. from Boston University.

He was the father of Lorenzo F. Kinney, Jr., Galen R. Kinney, Helen Kinney French and Esther Kinney Magoon.
