∼Elizabeth Mary Barchus was the daughter of Levi H and Sarah Kirk (Hedges) Barchus. “Lizzie” was born 7 November 1852 in Urbana, Champaign, Ohio. She came from a large family. Her father died in 1869 when Lizzie was about 16. In 1871 Lizzie graduated from Urbana High School. She gave a commencement address entitled: “Woman in History” as was reported in the Urbana Union dated 12 July 1871. She began work as a railroad clerk. She was listed on the 1880 census in both Urbana, Ohio and Westfield, NY, although she was probably actually living in Westfield. About 1881 Lizzie married Charles Carlton Phelps. They continued to live in New York, moving to Sidney, Delaware, New York before 1892. Between 1905 and 1910 they moved to Yakima, Washington. Charles and Lizzie had no children. Elizabeth Mary “Lizzie” (Barchus) Phelps died 28 September 1931.
