Nora Marie Hanley, 89, of Taylorville, and formerly of Vandalia, passed away at 7:15pm, Thursday July 14, 2011 at Taylorville Care Center. She was born May 17, 1922 in Vandalia Illinois, the daughter of Clifford and Julia Jeffs Hanley.

Nora graduated from the Edith I Heller School of Beautyin 1941. She worked as a beautician from 1941 until 1949. In 1949 she graduated from the National College for Christian Workers in Kansas City Missouri. She also graduated from Scamtt College for Christian Workers in Nashville, Tennessee in 1975. She was commissioned as a Deaconess in the United Methodist Church in June 1949. She served as church secretary and parish worker in Hadley Methodist Church and First Methodist Church in Liberal Kansas. She also served as an education assistant at the First United Methodist Church in Kewanee, Illinois and St James United Methodist Church in Danville, Illinois. She served as Director of Iowa National Hall in Des Moines Iowa, a home for 150 young women. In Lansing Michigan she served as the Director of Christian Education. Nora was a member of the Taylorville First United Methodist Church where she had worked as a Deaconess, Director of Christian Education, and Director of Caring Ministry. She retired in 1987, and continued to remain active in many aspects of the church.

She is survived by her brother: Earl R Hanfey, wife Ellen, of Wentsville, Missouri; Nieces: Verna Anderson of Moline, Illinois, Janet Verscheure, husband Gerald, of Geneseo, Carol Bressner, husband Tom, of Moweaqua, Judy O'Dell, husband Larry, of Greenville, Vickie Hutchcraft, husband David, of Vandalia; Nephews: Gary Revis, wife Dana, of Katy Texas, Donald Smail, wife Sharon, of Brownstown, and Dennis Smail of Vandalia, and Jack Hanley; 21 Great Nieces and Nephews; 12 Great Great Nieces and Nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; Brothers: Calvin Hanley, Kenneth Hanley, Samuel Hanley, Robert Hanley; Sisters: Hazel Lindquist, June Revis, Johanna Smail; and one Nephew.

Visitation will be held Monday from 5 until 7 pm at McClure Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:30am, Tuesday July, 19 2011 at the Taylorville Fist United Methodist Church with Gary Revis and Rev, Becky Lembke officiating. Burial will take place at 2pm in the Evans Cemetery, Vandalia. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Taylorville.
