Tuesday, 31 May 2005

Mr. James Monroe Alford, Jr., 89, of Charlotte, NC, died peacefully at Presbyterian Matthews Hospital on May 30, 2005, due to a recent stroke.

Jim was born in Tylertown [Walthall Co.], Mississippi on September 30, 1915, to the late James Monroe Alford, Sr., and Amanda Felder Alford. He was a graduate of Tylertown High School's class of 1932. He continued his education at Pearl River Jr. College. In 1937, he graduated from his much beloved Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and he was a proud member of the engineering honor society of Tau Beta Pi. Jim enjoyed attending his 60th and 65th class reunions at MSU in recent years. (Go Bulldogs!) Jim also earned a Masters degree in engineering at Ohio State University.

Jim served in the Signal Corp. of the United States Army during World War II. He earned the rank of Colonel before retiring from military service. He also enjoyed a long career at Southern Bell Telephone Company, where he worked for 40 years.

Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing the trumpet, cooking on the grill, boating, and watching ball games on TV. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church and had previously been a member at Memorial Methodist Church for many years. He very much enjoyed the friends and fellowship at both of these churches through the years.

Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Hankins Alford, who died in 1978, and his second wife, Juanita C. Alford, who died in 2003. He is survived by his son, Ed Alford; daugh Teresa; and grandchildren, Christopher and Kaylen, all of Monroe, N.C. He is also survived by nephews, Dr. Gene Reagan, of Baton Rouge, LA and Bob Wells, of Youngsville, LA.

Jim was a kind and caring Southern gentleman. He will be forever missed and forever loved by his family and friends.

Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at Harry and Bryant Company, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, immediately followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews....
