William Morris Sheppard, son of Arthur and Lula Sheppard, was a graduate of Spiro High School ca. 1936/37.

Prior to WW2 he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served aboard the cruiser Quincy. In 1941, he was attacted to the USS Juneau CL-52, an Atlanta Class light cruiser.

During the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, his ship was sunk on 13 November 1942. In total, 687 men, including the five Sullivan brothers, were killed in action as a result of its sinking.
