GOSHEN -- Dr. Kermit Ray Bechtel, 79, of 1700 Lawndale Place, died at 5:30 p.m. Monday (July 10, 2000) at Goshen General Hospital, where he had been a patient since July 3.
Dr. Bechtel was a dentist in Goshen for 40 years.
He was born in Harrison Township on Feb. 26, 1921, to Daniel and Blanche (Cripe) Bechtel. He graduated in 1939 from Goshen High School and in 1944 from the Indiana University School of Dentistry.
On June 26, 1949, he married Dorothy Lacey in Goshen and she survives with two daughters, Mrs. Brian (Margaret) Zentz of Goshen and Mrs. John (Elizabeth "Tish") Stump of Syracuse; a son, Dr. Mark Bechtel of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Two brothers, Harold and David, and a sister, Bonieta Swihart, are deceased.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home and one hour before the 11 a.m. Thursday service at First Presbyterian Church of Goshen. The Rev. Charlie Winkelman will officiate and burial will be at Yellow Creek Cemetery.
Dr. Bechtel served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a captain and dental officer in the Air Transport Command in India. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Goshen Rotary Club and American Legion and served on the Elkhart County Board of Health for many years.
Memorials may be given to the church or Salvation Army.
