He was a Missouri State Service Officer for the Veteran’s Affairs until his retirement. He was a World War I Army veteran and was awarded life membership in the American Legion for outstanding services to veterans. He was a former commander of Goad-Baillinger American Legion Post No. 69 in Springfield. He was a member of Abou Ben Adhem Shrine and a former member of the Greene County Library Board. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he had taught adult Sunday school for more than 30 years. He had spent the better part of his life in and around Springfield. He is survived by his wife, Barbary Henry Gates; a son, Stanley, Jr., and wife, Pegge Gates, Houston, Texas; grandsons, Thomas Stanley and wife, Christine Gates, St. Louis, John Gates, Dallas, Texas; great-grandchildren, Kimberly, Robert, Stephanie, Allyson, Cristie, Joh, Jr, and Margaret Elizabeth; a sister, Helen Potter, Springfield and numerous nieces; nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Maple Park Cemetery, Springfield, with Rev. Solomon Walters officiating. Services and burial are under direction of Meadors Funeral Home, Republic.
