US Congressman. He was born near Corydon, Indiana, where he attended local and common schools and the James G. May Seminary. After his education he studied law in New Albany, Indiana, and was admitted to the Indiana State Bar Association in 1870. He eventually commenced to practicing law in Corydon, Indiana, before relocating to Leavenworth, Indiana, in 1871, where he continued his practice. He served as prosecuting attorney of Crawford County, Indiana, and Harrison County, Indiana, from 1879 to 1885, and as a Judge of the Third Judicial Circuit Court from 1885 to 1897. He then turned his interests to politics and ran for a seat in the United States Congress. A Democrat, he served Indiana's 3rd District in the United States House of Representatives from 1897 to 1907. After his time in politics, he returned to his law practice in Corydon, Indiana, before moving to New Albany, Indiana, where he again continued his law practice until his death from complications of spinal sclerosis at the age of 70.
