Alice Amanda Nickels was the daughter of Captain Wm. Sewall Nickels of Searsport and Priscilla Small Austin of Addison, ME. As children, she and her twin sister Priscilla journeyed around the world with their parents on her father's bark Mary E. Russell.

Alice had known her husband since childhood; he was her grandmother's nephew, her father's cousin Captain Henry Thomas Lancaster. They were married 21 Dec 1886 in Brooklyn, NY when most of the families' ships were in port.

Alice was a descendant of Mayflower passengers Richard Warren and Stephen Hopkins and Maine revolutionary patriots James Nichols, Ichabod Austin, Jr., James Hall, Moses Worcester, Levi Fowler, Daniel Lancaster, and Jacob Clifford.
