James was the son of John C. Calfee and Virginia Anna Miller. Birthdate on his grave marker is incorrect. Hewas born in 1864. He was a farmer.

....Trouble Developed. Until a year ago, Calfee made his home with chief Harris and the chief's sister, Miss Hattie Harris, at 300 Randolph terrace. At that time trouble develped between the chief and Calfee, which resulted in the latter's departure. During the recent months, he [Calfee] had spent some time in Washington, D.C. and had returned to Bluefield during the past few weeks and had been making his home with Charley Ealy, a friend near Brushfork. Calfee has no close relatives in this section. He had been married, but his wife died several years ago....
It was announced last night that joint funeral services will be held for chief Harris and his uncle on Thursday, and burial will be in Monte Vista Park cemetery....
Mr. Calfee, the perpetrator of the double tragedy, was born in September 1864, being a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Calfee, of Tazewell County, Va. He served in the United States Army during the Indian War, 1885-1887. Most of his life had been spent in the West. He came to Bluefield seven years ago and since had resided in this city. He is survived by the following nieces and nephews: Mrs. R.[Reese] O. Carter, Miss Hattie Harris, Mrs. G.B. Hildebrand, all of Bluefield; Mrs. Ida Perdue of Winchester, Va., [Son] James Ed Calfee, of Bluefield, B.A. and J.C. Harris, of this city....
