An avid reader who enjoyed music and the arts. She grew up in North Hollywood, California and graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1942. On July 7, 1947 she married Eugene Valentine Rizzi (Gene Rizzi). Gene had lived across the street from Barbara; he was a friend and fishing companion to Barbara's father, Lee.

After her marriage, Barbara and Gene moved to Salt Lake City, Utah and then to Des Moines, Iowa and then to North Hollywood, California before finally settling into a new home located in the town of San Fernando, California.

She and Gene lived in San Fernando, California for many years before moving to Tucker, Georgia for a short while. After her husband retired from Brown and Bigelow, the couple traveled the United States and settled in Oregon, first in Gold Beach and then in Eugene.

Barbara was active in her childrens' education and served as the impetus for the development of their formal education and creative thinking.
