Robert, the son of Robert C. Delaphiano and Patricia A. Delaphiano, the husband of Patricia I. Delaphiano, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on March 12, 1969 in Detroit MI. He arrived in Vietnam on September 29, and was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

A four man OP (Out Post) close to a Pagoda near the An Loc village complex in Que Son District was attacked and overrun by an enemy force. Using hand grenades and automatic weapons they killed three Marines and wounded one man who managed to survive the deadly attack. A reaction force quickly responded but the enemy had already fled taking a PRC-25 radio and an M-16 rifle.

LCPL Delaphiano was one of the casualties; he was killed in action as a result of enemy gunshot wounds.
