Orville P. Ehlers, 89, of Longmont, Colo., died Aug. 15 at his home.

He was born May 31, 1910, in Charleston, Neb., to Elizabeth Wilkesen Ehlers and Claus Fredrick Ehlers.

Mr. Ehlers graduated from high school in Thayer, Neb., and attended college in York, Neb., and Midland College in Fremont, Neb.

He married Evelyn L. Chandler on July 28, 1935, in Central City, Neb.

Mr. Ehlers farmed in York County from 1932 to 1942. He moved to Cheyenne in 1942, and then to Longmont in 1961.

He worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a brakeman and train baggageman from 1942 until his retirement in 1975.

Mr. Ehlers was affiliated with St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cheyenne where he was a member of the church council. He was president of the south side community organization in Cheyenne, captain of the South Side Democratic Party, and belonged to several square dancing clubs, the 400 club of Brotherhood Trainmen, Carpenters Union and UTU Transportation Union for 55 years.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn L. Ehlers of Longmont; a son, Jack Ehlers of Longmont; two daughters, Betty Moore of Cheyenne and Donna Young of Fort Collins, Colo.; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ehlers was preceded in death by his parents; a younger brother, J.F. Ehlers; and a sister, Elizabeth E. Ehlers.
