In the 1850 census, Luke was 14 and living in East Norwegian, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, with his father Waters (42) a carpenter, his mother Margaret (34), and siblings Chauncey (11), Luthania (9), Mary (7), Angelina (2), and Mary Gardner (11) and Catherine Hensey (20).

In 1860, he was still at home with his family with new siblings William (11), and Emma Rebecca (5).

According to U.S. Civil War Soldiers records, Luke enlisted in Harrisburg on April 24, 1861 into Company H of the 9th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment for a 3 month term. He mustered out at Harrisburg on July 29, 1861 at the expiration of his term.

By 1870, Luke was married to Sarah E. Henry (28) and children in their home were Alice S. (7), Clara B. (3), Minnie M. (1). They were living in Palo Alto, PA.

In 1880, Luke (47) and Sarah (36) were in Palo Alto with their children Clara B. (13), Minnie M (12), Franklin (7) Eva R. (6), Florence E. (2). Luke was listed as a Master Carpenter.

Luke was admitted in 1894 to the Central Branch of the U.S. Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Montgomery, Ohio. Records state that he was 5'7" tall, fair complexioned, had green eyes, and gray hair. He could read and write, was Protestant (Methodist), and a carpenter by trade. He was widowed. He was discharged from the home at his own request on May 8. 1917. The name of his nearest relative was listed as his brother William F. of Shamokin, Pa.
