Confederate veteran. Grandson of William Gardenhire, a pioneer who lived at Citico near Ross's Landing in Hamilton County, Tennessee. Son of George W. Gardenhire and Polly Bottoms. Enlisted in August, 1861, at Snow Hill. Wounded at Cumberland Gap. Captured at Piedmont, Virginia, on June 5, 1864. Spent one year and nine months as a POW at Johnson's Island. After the war, he was an extensive property owner in Chattanooga, and was a cattle dealer. Married in 1868 to Leona Rogers (who died on June 19, 1927 in Chattanooga). Their home was on East 3rd Street where Chattanooga High School was later built. Died at his home on Harrison Avenue. First Presbyterian faith.
