Funeral services for Mrs.Lizzy H. Dowell were held at the Luling Methodist church Last Friday evening at 6 o'clock, with the pastor Rev. S. B. Beall, in charge. Then a long procession of friends and relatives followed to the City cemetery where the remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband, who passed away in 1886. The grave was made beautiful with a profusion of more than a hundred floral offerings one of which was sent by the Governor of Arizona.
Mrs. Lizxt H. Dowell was born on April 7, 1855, at Old Rancjh in Gonzales county, being the eldest child of Judge and Mrs. J. C. Gillespie. Her parents and grandparents were pioneer Texans. One grandfather was permanently disabled as a soldier when Texas was a republic. She was married in a old Ranch and Lavernia. As a young lady she taught school for awhile.
On Sep. 24, 1879, she was united in marriage with Shelton Clark Dowell, a nephew of Major Geo. w. Littlefield. To this union were born five children, three of whom survive: S. G. Her husband died soon after they moved back to Luling and is buried beside a young son and daughter, who passed away shortly before their father. Between the year 1882 when the family moved from Luling to Rogers Ranch and the year of 1885 when they moved twenty times living at various places in Caldwell, Hays and Gonzales counties. The deceased has two grandsons and one granddaughter, Miner Pitts, Jr., of Luling, Shelton Dowell Jr., and Mary Beth Dowell, of Douglas Arizona.
Besides her immediate family, Mrs. Dowellis survived by two sisters, Mrs. Callie Patterson and Mrs. Ola McPetters of Nixon; as well as a number of nieces and nephews and cousins, who loved her. There is a large family connection too of other relatives, who will miss her.
Her husband was the first cattleman to use wire fences in what is now known as the Nixon, Texas section. Mr. Dowell sold what is now Nixon to Mr, John Nixon, for whom the town was named.
Mrs. Dowell was devout Christian, a faithful wife, a loving mother and a fond grandmother. She loved her home her church, her town, her state, her country, and her God, although she has passed n to that eternal home prepared from the foundation of the world for gods elect, the influence of her noble life will live on as a benediction to succeeding generation.
