William Lewis McColgan was born on April 16, 1906 in Norton, Virginia, the son of Harry Bell and Mary Florence Turner McColgan
Lewis McColgan received his bachelor of arts degree from Davidson College, Davidson, North Carolina in 1928. He was a member of Kappa Alpha social fraternity and captain of the 1927 football team. He attended Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, from 1928 to his graduation; he was President of his senior class and received a bachelor of divinity degree in 1931. Lewis McColgan was licensed and ordained September 16, 1931 by the St. Louis Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church, U. S. (southern church)
Rev. Lewis McColgan began his career as Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of St. Charles, Missouri, from 1931 to 1937. While serving the St. Charles Church, Rev. McColgan married Allie Mae Bornman of Clarksdale, Mississippi, on June 24, 1936. Mrs. McColgan had been a student Lindenwood College and attended the St. Charles Church. In 1946 McColgan served as Moderator of the Synod of Tennessee.
In 1937 members of the First Presbyterian Church of Clarksville, Tennessee, persuaded the young minister to pastor their church. Lewis McColgan served this church until October, 1947. The McColgan's had three children while in Clarksville, Tennessee; Mary Allie McColgan, William Lewis McColgan, Jr., and Edgar Bornman McColgan.
In October of 1947, Lewis McColgan accepted a call to the First Presbyterian Church of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and preached his first sermon on October 19, 1947. Rev. McColgan served the First Presbyterian Church of Pine Bluff until his retirement on December 31, 1973. During the years of his ministry, Lewis McColgan was elected moderator of the Synod of Arkansas in 1959, served on the General Assemble Board of World Missions for 9 years, and was a member of the board of trustees of Arkansas College (Lyon College), Batesville, Arkansas, He served on the board of trustees of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary of Austin, Texas, and the Arkansas Synod's benevolent foundation. He served as Moderator of the East Arkansas Presbytery and served on several presbytery committees.
Arkansas College (Lyon College), Batesville, Arkansas conferred a doctor of divinity degree on W. L. McColgan in 1950.
Dr. McColgan was an exchange minister (with his wife and children) at St. Ninian's Presbyterian Church, Edinburgh, Scotland during the summer of 1958 and attended the American Institute of Theological studies at St. Mary's College, St. Andrews, Scotland, in the summer of 1970.
Dr. Mac's greatest personal accomplishment during his ministry at First Presbyterian was the twenty two years from the June 12, 1951 with the purchase of land for the construction of new Church facilities away from downtown to the dedication of the Sanctuary on March 31, 1974.
The W. Lewis McColgan Professorship of Religion was begun by the First Presbyterian Church, Pine Bluff, in April of 1979. The endowment in the amount of $259,000.00 provides the income to pay the salary of the designated professor of religion.
January 24, 1974 was "Dr. W. L. McColgan Day" at First Presbyterian Church. A deed to the manse at 1310 Olive Street was presented to Dr. and Mrs. McColgan by Jeff Starling on behalf of the congregation. A plaque was presented to Dr. McColgan by Glenn Railsback, Sr. an elder emeritus, on behalf of the congregation.
Dr. William Lewis McColgan and Allie Mae Bornman McColgan are buried in Graceland Cemetery in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
