Mr. Melvin G. Newton, 77, passed away at his home on May 19, 2011, surrounded by his family.
He was born January 20, 1934, in La Porte , Indiana , the son of Othel M. Newton and Helen (Tague) Newton.
Melvin worked as an electrician for Rexam, retiring in 1996. He attended Grace Baptist Church. Melvin was a Veteran of the US Navy, serving in the Korean War. He was an avid grower of orchids in many varieties and colors. He and his wife traveled to all of the US states, Novia Scotia and all but two Providences in Canada. Melvin's greatest joy was camping with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, also taking them on vacation.
On November 6, 1954, in La Porte, he was married to Donna Rae (Dee) Brown Newton.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Donna Newton; one daughter, Pamela Newton; two grandchildren, Scott & Melodee Koziatek; and five great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Courtney, Cory, and Codee & Connor.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and three brothers.
Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte where the family will receive friends Monday, May 23, 2011 from 11 a.m. until time of service. Services will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., Monday, May 23, 2011 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Kim Landrum officiating. A Military Service will be conducted at the cemetery. Interment will follow in the Patton Cemetery , LaPorte , Indiana
