U.S. Congressman. Active in newspaper work, he was a reporter for the Knoxville Whig, the Chronicle and purchased the Herald Tribune in Jonesboro, Tennessee, in 1876. He was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions, Jonesboro Postmaster, in 1881 and served as Doorkeeper of the United States House of Representatives for the Forty-seventh Congress, (1881-83). In 1897, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fifth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses and served until his death at age 59.
