Roscoe Ray Gibson, 90, of Tipton, died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City.
He was born Aug. 20, 1917, in Huntsville, a son of Byron C. and Cordia R. Hughes Gibson. On Feb. 9, 1940, in Columbia, he was married to Mary Emma Whitfield, who died Nov. 11, 2005.
He grew up near Huntsville. He received a degree in vocational agriculture from the University of Missouri in 1939.
He taught vocational agriculture in California, Mo., for two years. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and was the navigator and second in command on a landing craft support boat. He served most of his duty near Japan. He was discharged in 1946.
He worked with the State Department of Education, setting up vocational training for veterans, for a short time. He started the vo-ag department at Tipton High School in 1946. He taught high school students and had large classes of adult farmers during his 26 years of teaching. He started the agriculture business program at State Fair Community College in 1969. He taught there for 15 years. He was a member of Tipton United Methodist Church and Tipton American Legion.
Surviving are two sons, Phillip Gibson, and his wife, Meg Darkow, of Columbia, and Dean Gibson, and his wife, Michelle, of Clarksburg; a daughter, Susan Williams, and her husband, Wesley, of Clarksburg; a brother, Van Gibson, of Portland, Ore.; eight grandchildren, Ryan Gibson, Brent Gibson, Connor Gibson, Fred Williams, Daniel Williams, Elyse Gibson, Abby Gibson, and Seth Gibson; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Alvin Gibson, Harry Gibson, Donnie Gibson and Arnold Gibson; and two sisters, Irene Gibson and Christine Broaddus.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tipton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Bullock officiating. Pallbearers will be Brad Norman, Ronnie Long, Pat Snorgrass, Don Snorgrass, Fred Williams and Daniel Williams. Burial will be in Tipton Masonic Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion.
