Quaker, Samuel Kellum and family came to Salem in the spring of 1839 from near Port LaHanna, now Fountain City, Indiana. His wife was a sister of Levi Coffin and was in sympathy with his anti-slavery work. Nathan, Samuel's son, became a conductor on the Underground Railroad and married Rachel Maxwell, in 1853.
The Samuel Kellum family lived in Marion township, Lee County, Iowa on 80 acres he purchased by land patent in 1841 and where son Nathan was a Conductor on the Underground Railroad . They were still lived here, when Samuel died and it is logical he is buried in this cemetery. His son Harmon is per Quaker records.

*The New Garden Meeting became a meeting in 1841 and closed in 1879. so when the Kellums came to Iowa in 1839 Salem would have kept the first records, even though they lived in the New Garden area. New Garden membership ca 70 families.
