She is listed as Marguerite Ellen in one of the census records. M.E. Harris and J.W. Shelby were married in Hardin County, Tennessee on Dec. 6, 1877. In the 1930 census, she indicates that she married at eighteen years of age (1873), however all the children carry the Shelby name. DNA of descendants of oldest child, Robert Wesley, bears out the Shelby line.

Josiah Brewer and Margaret Ellen Harris Shelby were married July 27, 1928 in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas. Josiah dies in 1935 and from the 1940 census, her granddaughter and grandson-in-law come to live with her, Ruby Venita Robertson Wilkins and J.W. Wilkins.

At the time of her death, she was living with her son, Charles Luther Shelby in Webber Falls, Muskogee County, Oklahoma. Her daughter, Mattie Belle Shelby Meadors, pays her funeral expense and has her buried in Wetumka, Hughes County, Oklahoma where she will later be buried.

Marguerite or Margaret Ellen Harris Shelby was the daughter of William Coleman Harris and Martha Louisa Emily "Luiza" Milam. A number of families from Savannah, Hardin County, Tennessee came to Franklin County, Arkansas to homestead land, Milam, Harris, and Shelby were just several of these families. It is uncertain if many of these families were part of a group or if the first families sent word back home about the homestead land in Franklin County, Arkansas and others followed.

Marguerite or Margaret Ellen Harris Shelby Brewer was a strong pioneer woman. Her grandchildren remember her as an outspoken, stubborn, strong-wiled and deeply committed to her Lord.
