William C. Andersen died Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Yale-New Haven Hospital of complications following cardiac surgery. He was sixty-seven years old.

He was born September 1, 1943 in Mount Vernon, New York to Harold and Mary Leland Andersen. Bill graduated from Saint Mary High School and Iona College with a degree in criminal justice. He served in the United States Navy as a proud submariner.

He joined the Greenwich Police Department in 1970 and rose through the ranks to become Chief of Police in 1986. Following his retirement from the GPD, he was appointed United States Marshal for the District of Connecticut by President George H.W. Bush. When his term in office finished, he was employed by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Procter and Gamble as head of security at Clairol in Stamford. He retired in 2008.

His too short retirement was spent enjoying the beach at Tod's Point, travelling with his wife Elaine, and cooking brunch for submarine veterans and their families in Groton, CT. Always interested in town affairs, Bill served two terms on the RTM and served on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich and the Boy Scouts of America, Greenwich Council. He was a member of the Horseneck Club. On May 14, 2011, he was honored by Iona College with the Brother Arthur A. Loftus Award for Outstanding Achievement in Criminal Justice. Of all his many accomplishments, Bill was proudest of his family.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years, Elaine Busch Andersen; his three sons, W. Christian Andersen, Jr. and his wife Laura of Greenwich, Matthew Busch Andersen of Clinton, CT, and Brian Patrick Andersen of Greenwich. Bill is also survived by his sister, Judith Poulin of Eastham, MA; his brother, Peter Andersen of Loch Lloyd, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother John.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday May 25, 2011 at 10:00 a..m in St. Mary's Church, 178 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich.
Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Fred D. Knapp & Son Funeral Home, 267 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich.
