Feb 18,1913-May 22,2011

Josephine Cleo Fritz, 98, a longtime resident of North Platte, NE, passed away May 22, 2011, at Linden Court in North Platte where she had resided since 1998. Josephine was born on February 18, 1913, in McCook, NE, to Harrison Noble and Gertrude Susan Doyle Bortner. She grew up on the H.N.Bortner farm along Red Willow Creek in Frontier County, northeast of Culbertson, NE. Josephine graduated from Culbertson High School with the Class of 1931, then attended Nebraska State Normal School in Kearney for one year. She taught school for two years in a one-room country school house north of Culbertson. In 1933, Josephine married Claude J. Fritz of Culbertson. They moved to North Platte in 1936 where Claude worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and farmed east of town. They were married 66 years and together raised a son and a daughter in North Platte. She was a homemaker and enjoyed baking and gardening. Josephine was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of North Platte. The Northern Lights women's Sunday School class was especially dear to her. She served in ladies' circle groups while able to do so. Josephine was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary at Great Plains Regional Medical Center and was honored in 1991 for serving 2000 hours as a "Pink Lady." As a resident at Linden Court, Josephine especially enjoyed visitors who shared their children and babies with the residents. Over the years, many on staff came to affectionately call her "Jo Jo." The Fritz and Booker families are grateful to the Linden Court staff for their loving care. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Gertrude Bortner; her son, Claude C. 'Bub' Fritz, in 1991; her husband, Claude J. Fritz, in 1999; and a brother, Donald Preston Bortner, in 2005. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery. The memorial service for Josephine Fritz will be May 27, 2011, at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore.
