CAMDEN - A memorial service honoring the life of Robert P. Dean shall be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Grace Episcopal Church, Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC. Inurnment will be in the Memorial Garden. The Reverend Philip Whitehead will officiate. The family will receive friends in Richardson Hall following the service. Memorials may be made in Mr. Dean's memory to Grace Episcopal Church, 1315 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020.
Mr. Dean died on Sunday, May 22, 2011. Born in Montclair, NJ on October 3, 1930, he was the son of the late George Edgar and Lois Farmer Dean.
Mr. Dean, widower of the late Alice Ulrich Dean, completed public schools in Montclair, NJ and graduated from Yale University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He completed the Naval Officers' Candidate School in Newport RI and served three years active duty during the Korean War. He remained active in the Naval Reserve for many years, achieving the rank of Commander, USNR. Following his active naval duty, Mr. Dean was employed by The Budd Co., Philadelphia, PA, The Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corp, in CT and the Minerals Pigments and Metals Division of Pfizer, Inc. from whom he retired in 1996. With Pfizer, he spent many years at their Adams, MA operation prior to his transfer to Eastover, SC to assume management of the then new PCC Plant associated with Union Camp's Eastover Mill. Mr. Dean was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church and served as a member of the Vestry and other committees. In addition, Mr. Dean had been active on the boards of the Camden Chapter of the South Carolina Society of Engineers and the former Camden Dinner Club. For many years, he was an active member of the Golden Kiwanis in Camden and Springdale Hall.
He is survived by 3 sons, Prentice of Nashville, TN, Jeffrey of Londonderry, NH and Lloyd of Petersburg, NY; 6 grandchildren and a sister, Adelle Buck of Montclair, NJ.
