Mrs. W. C. Adam Called by Death Here at Age 78
Valley Resident For Past 56 Years Passes In Home
Mrs. Ada V. Adam, 78 wife of William C. Adam and a resident of Santa Maria for 56 years, died last night in the family home, 1035 West Main street, after a long period of failing health.
Deceased was the mother of Leonard H. Adam and of Mrs. George Pratt, both of Santa Maria, and of Mrs. Frank Marshall of King City.
Another son, Elmo C. Adam, died in San Francisco last March.
She was the sister of W. F. Kelley, of Santa Barbara.
She was a sister-in-law of Mrs. C. L. Preisker and Mrs. Isaac Porter, and leaves many other close connections in the valley.
The widower is the oldest surviving child of the late William L. Adam, pioneer Santa Maria valley merchant and farmer, the first man to introduce irrigation to the valley. The pioneer father located here in 1869 and established the first store in the valley, west of the present Santa Maria when there was no Santa Maria, nor even a Central City, the predecessor of Santa Maria.
Mrs. Adam was born in San Francisco on Feb. 28, 1865.
She and Mr. Adam were married in Guadalupe in 1888, and she was prominent throughout her life in club, church and social affairs in Santa Maria. She was an early member of the Minerva Library Club and a past president of the organization.
Recitation of the rosary will take place in the family home 1035 West Main at eight o'clock tomorrow night. The funeral cortege will form at the residence at nine o'clock Saturday morning, proceeding to St. Mary's Catholic Church, where requiem mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. Thomas V. Murphy at 9:30.
Interment in Santa Maria cemetery will be under the direction of Dudley Mortuary.
