Kate was born 10 Mar 1859 at the family farm "Woodstock" in Christian County, Kentucky, last child of Capt. Ned Meriwether (1824–1861) and Eliza Sharp (1827–1887). She received a high school education and on 22 May 1883 she married her first cousin, Henry Stites Barker. They had no children.
