George R. Smith of McDonald, PA died May 30, 1944. He was killed in action in Germany while serving as a gunner with the 8th Air Force. Before entering the military, had had worked at Crucible Steel. He was survived by his wife, Marian Smith Maley; his mother, Rebecca Smith; a sister, Martha Pitner; and two brothers, Jack and Regis. A funeral Mass was held at St. Alphonsus Church in July of 1949. Interment with military honors was at Robinson Run Cemetery under the direction of Rogers Funeral Home.
