Several soldiers that served with John Rand in the 11th C.V.I., including his brother, Henry A. Rand, completed affidavits attesting to the chills, fever and rheumatism suffered by him before his hospitalization.
John Rand is the grandson of Prentis Crossley, a person of color, who was a slave that served in the Revolutionary War and was granted his freedom. John is shown as white is some records and mulatto in others. He was a fisherman and a farm laborer.
