Hugh was the older of two brothers. His parents were John McKinstry of Ireland and Ann Wilson McKinstry from Scotland. His parents are buried in Glenwhery Cemetery, Ballmany, Antrim Co., Ire. He married Elizabeth Townsend in 1854 in Ireland. They had 9 children. Two were born in Ireland. The other 7 were born in Van Buren Township, Wayne Co., Michigan. Hugh died at age 52 and his wife at age 84. Their children: Mary, 1825; Ann W. 1827; John, 1830; Andrew, 1836; Nancy J., 1840; William H., 1841; James, 1844; Eliza, 1846; Robert, abt. 1842.
