When Edith was ten years old, she wrote the following letter to the Editor of the Young Folk's Department at the Grand Traverse Herald, Traverse City, Michigan: "Almira, December, 1884: "I have never written on any such occasion but will do my best. "I am ten years old. I live in Almira, Benzie Co., Michigan. "I have two sisters and one brother and a father, but my mother is dead. She died a year ago last March, and my grandmother is living with us. "I have one pet. He is a large cat that is fifteen years old and weighs nearly fifteen pounds. Old as he is, he catches many red squirrels every summer, and when he was a young cat he caught a half grown rabbit and a great many partridges. But he is getting too old to catch much game. He does not do much but to lie under the stove. "Good-bye, "Edith May Linkletter."
