He was born in Dudley, Miss., son of the late Oliver Hayes and Oma Victoria Smothers Hayes.
He was a WW II U.S. Army Veteran and was a recipient of the Victory Medal.
He is survived by his wife, Lizzie Jane Hayes; one daughter, Betty Ann Ashby of Portland, Ore.; one stepdaughter, Virginia Alma Parker and husband Dennis of Dallas; one stepson, Elbert Moser Vassey and wife Eulene of Alexis; one nephew, Donnie Hayes;
two nieces, Karen Sue King and Faye Bolster; one granddaughter and one grandson.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Hayes will be held at the Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Holly with the Rev. Marshall Owens officiating.
Burial will be at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.
