Epitaph: "When this you see remember me, a Soldier of the Revolutionary War for Liberty who departed this life the 24th August, 1839, aged 83 years, 3 months and 13 days. Rawleigh Hammond Senior, born in Fairfax County, Virginia. He made no profession but often expressed a satisfaction with evidence of hope after death. He was a provident and affectionate husband and father, a good citizen and respected by all who knew him. He died suddenly, at one minutes warning, leaving a numerous family of descendants who mourn his departure."

After moving from Virginia to Warren County,NC he took the Oath of Allegiance in 1778 and served in the Revolutionary War as a Private and Wagonmaster with the North Carolina Continental Line.
