Sgt. Estep first joined the United States Marine Corps. in December of 1937 and served until December of 1941. In July of 1942 he reenlisted and served until honorably discharged in July of 1946. He was awarded the Marine Corps. Good Conduct medal with reenlistment bar, the World War II Victory medal, the Marksman badge for the M-1, the Expert badge for the M-1 Carbine, and the Expert badge for the .45 Pistol.
