Maternal grandmother of Ira, George, Arthur, and Frances Gershwin.

She married Gershon Brushkin in 1874. They had nine children, of which three survived: Rosa Gershwin, Bernard (Barney), and Katiel (Kate or Kay) Wolpin.

The family immigrated to the USA in 1891. She changed her name to Mary Bruskin.

The US 1900 census form, taken on 9 June 1900, shows her living with Gershon, Katie, and Barney, lists her birth date as May 1858, and her immigration date as 1891.

The US 1910 census form, taken on 15 April 1910, shows her living with Gershon, Katie, and Barney, and lists her age as 45. As late as 1910, neither she nor Gershon apparently spoke English, conversing rather in Yiddish.

After Gershon's death in 1917, Mary moved in with her daughter Kate Wolpin's family. The US 1920 census form, taken on 9 January 1920, shows her living with Abraham and Kate Wolpin, lists her age then as 60, and "able to speak English" as Yes.

The US 1930 census form, taken on 19 April 1930, shows her living with Abraham and Kate Wolpin, lists her age then as 65, and her immigration date as 1894.

Funeral services were held at Riverside Memorial Chapel, New York City, on Thursday, 7 March 1940 at 1:30pm.

Alternate American spellings for her maiden name may be Dechinick, Dechinek, or Dechkin.
