William Goddard Iselin was the son of Hope Goddard Iselin, the only child of Brown University Chancellor William Goddard (BP 204) and his wife Mary Edith Jenckes Goddard (BP 205), and C. Oliver Iselin, a New York banker. Hope Goddard and Iselin were married in the Goddard family home on the corner of Brown and George Streets, today the home of Brown's Maddock Alumni Center. Iselin was a yachtsman accustomed to the very best society. He co-owned and managed America's Cup defenders the Vigilant, the Defender, the Columbia, and the Reliance. When he and his wife desired a portrait of their son, they chose one of New England's best-known painters. Young William died at the age of six.

"Jesus, Tender Shepherd, hear me;
Bless Thy little lamb tonight;
Through the darkness be Thou near me;
Keep me safe 'till morning light."
