William Campbell Obituary
The city was shocked yesterday to hear of the death at half-past 4 in the morning of Mr. Wm. Campbwell, the practical head of the firm of Schmidt & Ziegler.
Mr. Campbell was born in this city in 1846 and received but a common school education. Whe the war broke out he enlisted in Fenner's Battery and served until the surrender, when he entered business in Galveston, where, in 1869, he married a sister of Ambrose Smith, Esq., of this city.
In 1870 he returned to his native city, and a few years later, having in the meantime become a most capable grocer, accepted a responsible position with Schmidt & Ziegler, whom, for the past two decades, he has represented with marked success upon the doors of the exchanges.
A deep and judicious reader, he acquired during his manhood an education that enabled him to assume in society the position which both his ancestry and his ability entitled him and he was a favorite in his clubs. His Masonic lodge and his commercial circles.
But his home life was his greatest joy, and only those who saw him as the husband and father can know the grief of his family consequent upon his unexpected death.
Mr. Campbell leaves his widow and six children. His eldest daughter is married to Mr. J. E. Cursel.
The remains will be buried at half-past 10 o'clock this morning in Metairie cemetery. Temporary interment will be had in the tomb of the Army of Tennessee of which Mr. Campbell was a member.
