When the 1900 Federal Census was taken, John and his wife, Elizabeth, were living on a farm they owned at Fair Forest in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Elizabeth had given birth to eight children, however, only six were living, William; David; twins Jonas and Joseph; Mary; and John.

By 1910, John and Elizabeth resided at Prairie in Washington County, Arkansas, where John farmed land he owned. The Crawleys had two more daughters, Citoria and Bonnie. Their sons David, Joseph, and Jonas worked on the family farm.

John was a retired widower by 1930 and was living at Fayetteville, North Carolina. He reamined in Fayetteville until his death in 1939.
