In 1892 he married Florence Noble Evans in Kirkwood, Missouri. As a young man he was an employee of Laclede Bank, then Mechanics Bank. Upon the incorporation of A.G. Edwards & Sons in 1891 he became an officer. Upon its founding, he became the first president of the St. Louis Stock Exchange.
He was a director of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, also known as the 1904 World's Fair, serving as co-chairman of the Committee for Concessions.
