Birthdate and place, death place and link to parents provided by MacKay 45 (#47549287) May 22, 2017.

Clara died at the age of 41 years, 2 months and 20 days. She was the wife of Volney Shearer.

Thank you to Goldrush (#47418713) for adding the following on September 28, 2013:

Clara M. Shearer's maiden name was Silsby. She was age 41 yrs 2 mo 20 days when she died and the 2nd wife of Volney.

She came to CA with her sister Lizzie from Amherst, Maine and lived in SF. She was a school teacher. While visiting Big Trees she met Volney Shearer and they were married in Stockton 11/13/1855.

When the child of Wm. Lapham was about 9-10, he sent her to a boarding school in Stockton because he felt she was a nuisance around the Big Trees hotel which he ran. Clara Silsby, 2nd wife of Volney Shearer, obtained a position teaching in that school and during vacation took the girl to Big Trees. Since the hotel needed a chambermaid and Mrs. Lapham had TB, Clara stayed there until she married Shearer in 1855 per a letter written by Annie Schaeffle letter 10/20/1930.

Step children Clara Louise (Mrs. Charles M. Parsons); Ernest H. Shearer.

Children Annie Rogers (Mrs Ernest H. Schaeffle); James Leverett
